PACHANGA'S MEXICAN RESTAURANT is a little bit of Mexico in the heart of downtown Idaho Falls. Owners Antonio and Erica Meza do not run a big eatery at 552 North Capital Avenue, but that's the way they want it.

“If you blink you’ll miss it,” says Antonio. But if you use your nose you won't miss it, and once you have been there, you will find yourself returning again and again.

The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting. The bright colors and the music add to the ambience.

Try the guacamole, made with fresh avocados and tomatoes and just the right amount of spice, cool, creamy and delicious. For those who find the salsa a bit too hot, the guacamole will certainly take the edge off.

Since one of Antonio’s watchwords is “back to basics,” try the combo plate consisting of a cheese enchilada and a carne asada taco accompanied by rice and beans.

As for Pachanga's signature dish, it is the “Pollo Fundido,” a tender, well-seasoned chicken and cheese in a flour tortilla, deep-fried to a crisp golden brown. It is then cut in half, garnished with cheese, black beans and corn then served with rice and beans.

For a finishing touch, have the home made caramel flan topped with whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon. Muy excelente!

The menu is not large, but it is diverse. Of course they have the basics covered, but there are also some surprises. From the appetizers and salads, to the burros (much like a burrito, only larger) … something for everyone. There is also a section that is based on requests — just another example of their focus on the customer.

Siesta Hour is every day from 4 to 6 p.m. and consists of 20 percent off all “munchies” and a dollar off all beers (Mexican, domestic and premium.) What a great way to end the workday. The drink selection also includes wine, margaritas and even white Russians.
